It's been almost six weeks and the raised bed garden is "growing strong!" We had a problem with the spinach--which I replaced last week. The kale is growing like crazy...in fact, so much that I gave some to a neighbor.

Since the first planting, I added a variety of herbs. We have been using them for cooking and baking. Basil, bay leaf, cilantro, dill, sage, oregano, and thyme. I also added a pot of sugar snap peas, a few kinds of tomatoes, and leeks!

We "hosted the family Easter dinner this year. We decided to have dinner in our screened porch since the weather was pleasant. I purchased the farm table last fall at a local antique store. I added different chairs as I collected them. One is from the old Davis-Kidd Booksellers that went out of business this year.

My Spring Break...2011

Late last summer I began my journey researching the "farm to table" concept. This was sparked by the baking class I attended at Saltwater Farm in Maine last August.

Throughout the year, my husband and I visited local farmer's markets and independent restaurants that featured "farm to table" meals and resources.

We considered the small space in our courtyard and wondered if we could viably design an "urban type" raised-bed garden that would produce vegetables. Our interest led us to a class offered at Salud! in Nashville which was led by a representative of Gardens of Babylon. Gardens of Babylon is located at the Nashville Farmer's Market. It carries a great variety of plants, trees, and shrubs including vegetable plans, herbs, and flowers.

Working in our small space, we designed our raised bed garden. We began by drawing in scale what we hoped to accomplish.

The idea was to "go organic" and to use "lasagna layering" in order to provide nutrients for the plants.

Paul designed the actual space. He used treated wood and added posts. I added the copper caps!

Next, I researched which vegetables might grow in the space we had with the amount of sun throughout the day and with the underground watering system already in place.

We purchased starter plants at Gardens of Babylon as well as Martin's in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Here's what we started with:

Two kinds of lettuce, strawberries, chives, onions, and a few garlic.

Next, lettuce, two cabbages, two broccoli, curly kale, redbor kale, and rosemary!

The design of homemade pasta!

I went to another class on Monday! This time it was homemade paste with a variety of sauces. As a child, I would watch my grandmother get out the "mararoni board" from behind the big white stove. I loved watching her make the dough and use the board to roll out all kinds of pasta.

This class was a bit different than grandma's house. Held at the Viking Cooking Store in Franklin, the class was informative and very helpful. We made three kinds of pasta with three different sauces.

The first was herbed pasta with red wine reduction and mushrooms, next--whole wheat ravioli with savory pumpkin filling and sage butter, and last--tortellini with tomato concasse.

The most surprising was the ravioli because I did not think that pumpkin filling would ever top the taste of meat ravioli. But...the result was a wonderful combination worthy of fall!

A day before class, I brought all of my remaining herbs (and even a tomato plant) into the screened porch. Once class ended, I was anxious to get home and plan a homemade pasta menu using my herbs and the information I learned in class. I decided to try the herbed pasta with red wine reduction.

Paul's Day of Design

This past Saturday, Paul showed a collection of his wheel-thrown plates at the Arts Company (5th Avenue, Nashville). The main artist, Tony Breuer, was showing his collection titled--Seeing Through Spaces. Paul's collection theme, Time and Space, complemented Tony's and presented an interesting mix of media. The "showings" were part of the First Saturday Art Crawl.

Several were sold--including a start chart that consisted of two separate plates that--when rotated--visualized the night sky.

Ever since my experience at Salt Water Farm, I have been in a baking frenzy! ... truly! I have been pouring over baking books, studying, and experimenting.

I have also been downloading baking books to my iPad as furiously as ordering through amazon. This has opened up a world of possibilities. Tarts with Tops On, Savory Baking, Pies, Tarts, and Cakes Cookbook, Whole Foods Cookbook, etc., etc..

I anxiously am awaiting my copy of none other than Julia Child's French cookbooks... oy, what has happened to me?!

The house smells wonderful, but... I am wreaking havoc in my kitchen and find that I absolutely will be redesigning it over the next year. My neighbors love me because they are my "testing participants!"

Here are some of my delicious creations inspired by my baking class in Maine:

My masterpiece! These are buttery croissants. They took me almost six hours because I had to make a butter block and chill, roll, chill, etc. There were too many of them so I had to freeze some. I'll bring them out on a cool, fall day and think of Maine!

On a recent trip to Maine, I decided to enroll in a baking class. Along with being a "closet decorator," I like to think of myself as a "recreational baker!"

I am always fascinated on visits to Williams Sonoma and can't seem to exit the store without dropping serious $$$!! My baking book collection continues to grow as does my kitchen equipment collection--many items from Williams Sonoma, but, also many from antiques shops and specialty kitchen stores.

So...with that said...this year I found an interesting and intriguing class which was held at the Salt Water Farm in Lincolnville, Maine. The farm's web site is in itself worth a look as it entices the viewer to read more about farming, savory cooking, and the events held at this wonderful place which overlooks the water.

The class was absolutely everything one would expect from a "baking in Maine" experience. What was not expected was the sights, sounds, and aromas -- along with the decorating -- that was part of the experience.

We assisted the class instructor and owner of Salt Water Farm, Annemarie Ahearn, and the farm manager, Ladleah Dunn, in making three delicious and wonderous desserts! I learned SO very much about temperature, techniques, and ...what a buckle is!

The kitchen was enough to prompt me to rethink and redesign my own. A welcoming atmosphere that demands a return visit very soon!

This weekend we decided to go in search of quirky objects! Some would call these "antiques!" But...I always question how old does an object have to be in order to be identified as an antique?

Living in a "new bungalow," I am always in search of things that reflect the societal times of real bungalows.

Sometimes I find old kitchen tools, plates, and furniture that just seem to "have a story" and that would fit in a specific place.

...this brings me to our travels of the weekend! We found out that there was going to be a music and arts festival in Watertown, Tennessee. It turns out that Watertown has held this same festival for several years. As with many southern festivals, music, antiques, and food were advertised!

As we drove to the "event" I began to think of all the festivals we have attended over our years living in southern states...the Jazz Festival, Watermelon Festival, Mule Day, Shad Festival, Collard Festival...you name it and you could probably find it somewhere in the steamy, humid south during one of the summer months!

Watertown was surprisingly interesting and ... of course... everyone was extremely helpful and friendly! I thought about the design of the town. The town square where the music stages were set up was familiar to us after having seen so many others over the years.

Colorful, painted brick buildings included several antiques shops, the public library, and a few cafes.

Jeanne's Antiques (below) was at one end of the square. I found this awesomely cool pashima in bright green and blue with fringe...so very "Ya Ya!" I will throw it on when I am conducting candlelight get togethers of the "sisterhood!"

Watertown Bed and Breakfast was at another end of the square. Here, I found several "stories" that I captured through pictures!

While on our visit, we found out that Watertown is home of the Stardust Drive In Theater! YES! It's a real drive in...can you believe that it is still in operation? In fact, the movies showing right now include Eclipse, Grownups, and Toy Story 3!

...getting ready for July 4th!

The "Annual July 4th Extravaganza" is coming up. For some reason, July 4th has evolved over the years into one of those holidays where the my family "gathers."

I think the tradition started when we lived in a community where there was a pool! We no longer have access to a pool, but we still gather!

When I think of July 4th, I usually think of outdoor picnics, barbeque, and fireworks.

Typically, if any decorating is to be done, it's in the form of bunting, outdoor flags, and lighting.

Although we do some decorating outdoors for July 4th, I always like to get the inside of the house ready for this summer holiday.

About the time May rolls around, we begin to see 4th of July decorations in local stores. Too early, but... as with anything...if you don't purchase when you see it ... gone!

This year I decided to take a trip to the local Yankee Candle to begin gathering items for the July 4th celebration. I created a few arrangements here and there just to add color and focus.

No large purchases--just a table runner, some interesting items for a table arrangement, and candles! I pulled my 4th of July wreath out of the attic and "tidied it up," got out the things I have collected over the years, and went to work on the arrangements. Here's what I came up with:

This piece of pottery "stays" on our breakfast table. I added the candle as the centerpiece. Next, I resurrected some red and clear glass stones. I found the "wicker" stars at Pier One!

For the screened-in porch--a table runner topped with a luminary and accepted by red stones and seashells. I added a July 4th ribbon!

The simple metal wreath hangs on the back door (which is inside the porch). We gather outside under the gazebo, but, always go in and out, so the wreath adds a nice touch.

I love this lantern from Yankee Candle - it reminds me of New England for some reason...

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts is located on Broadway in Nashville. The art deco building was originally a post office. Now, it houses the Frist Center, which opened in 2001.

The building itself is exactly what you would expect of something built in 1933 in terms of architectural design. It is typical of the period -- with marble floors, woodworking, and finishes.

The Frist is host to many exhibits--traveling as well as permanent. This week the Golden Age of Couture opened.

I read about the exhibit to get ready for my visit to the Frist and remembered taking a basic design class in undergraduate school where we studied the history of fashion design along with principles of interior and exterior design.

The "new look" -- in particular was one of the things I remember most about the class.

So...needless to say I was excited about the exhibit because all of the "greats" would be represented...Dior, Balenciaga, Shiapperelli, Lanvin, and of course...Coco!

The exhibit was much larger than I expected. It was organized in a way that took you on a journey through one of the greatest stages of fashion and fashion design. Here are some of the highlights taken from the program:

...will I ever own a Dior?!

Hatch Show Print...old school N'ville on Lower Broad!

Last night we attended the Nashville Rising benefit concert for flood relief. As I watched the crowd I noticed a Hatch print commemorating the event was part of the "merch" for sale--with all proceeds being donated to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

Although you might not know it, you have probably seen a Hatch Show Print poster or print at some point in your life. The company was founded as Charles and Herbert Hatch and moved to Nashville in 1879.

The technique used is called, letterpress, and involves individual, movable letters and image blocks. These are coated with ink and then pressed onto a surface.

Famous for handbills announcing special appearances in the 1870s, Hatch Print also designs album/CD covers, event posters, postcards, invitations, and many other items.

I first realized that a CD cover was a Hatch print in 2001 when I purchased Bruce Springsteen Live in NYC!

Since I became aware of all of the posters and music-related materials designed and printed by Hatch, I visited the store thinking that there would be a ton of historic posters for sale. But, I found out that little are available in the actual store because the business has moved several times since the 1870s.

Pretty much the extent of the merch!

Now, I am always on the lookout for "anything Hatch!" Here are a few that we purchased and framed:

We bought this poster and framed it with a simple black, matte frame. We purchased it last year when the Conchords played the Ryman. It was the night of the Good Friday tornado! The print hangs in our hallway in the loft.

This framed woodcut was designed by the current owner of Hatch. It's called "The Walking Stick." Although some of it is cut off due to the glare, you can see a man bending down to pick up his walking stick. The woodcut is on one of the walls in our bedroom.

...and here's the newest--purchased last night at the concert. I'll have this one framed in a sleek black frame and already have a place in mind!

Here's to my father!

On this Father's Day, I'll share some of the things that my father loved. Although some of these things "are harmful to the health," he did love them!

My father passed away in 1993 and not a day goes by that I don't think of something he said or something that I would like to tell him. When I was a child growing up in Brooklyn, most of the fathers went to work in some type of service uniform.

Not my father! He worked in an office and wore a suit. My little friends always told me that he looked like Ricky Ricardo! Possibly it was his hair. More than likely it was the Spanish! It was all the more confusing when people would tell me "...you look JUST like your father!" I would then run to the mirror just to make sure I was still a girl and not turning into Ricky Ricardo!

Last night--while at pottery class--I thought about decorating with pottery again. This time, however, my thoughts went to "the blues!"

With the exception of my home office, I rarely use blue in decorating. But...I have used blue glazes on several pieces. The combination of color mixed with design and applique make the pieces interesting and unique.

After thinking of "the blues"-- my collection of bluish pottery, I realized that I didn't have as many as I thought. I sifted through those that reminded me of the tones and shades of the ocean (...again with the ocean) and selected a few to share today.

Most are mine, but, I "threw" in some that my husband made. Here are "the blues" that can be seen around our house.

All pieces are thrown on the wheel and were made at Studio S Pottery (Lewis and Eric Snyder). Check out their site at: Studio S Pottery!

This pot sits on a wooden bench in the foyer of our house. Glazes: Ethyl's red, M-5 (which is a matte black) and a combination of glazes that give the bluish effect.

These two were made early in my "pottery life." The smallest one was made six years ago. The other was a "mistake." While throwing I collapsed the rim by accident.

But... I liked it so I used an ash glaze on the inside and a yellow (VY) on the outside to see if would "morph" into something good...and it did!

The top is rimmed with yellow (VY) and the bottom of the pot is an ash glaze.

My "gnarly pot" -- This was a project that had to have a foot, applique, negative space, and a lid. There are a combination of glazes and techniques used. I rolled a net over some of the appliqued pieces of clay to make it look like fish scales! The lid didn't get fired until almost a year later (below)!

My newest blues:

Lewis thought the one on the right was just "too blue," but it grew on me. I think it looks "blue enough" with the candle.

Today it is going to be in the mid 90s in temperature with a heat index of approximately 104! That's the bad news...the good news is that I will once again have my free, daily facial due to the humidity. ...gotta' love the south!

Maybe it's due to the heat, but I find myself thinking of the ocean and the cool breeze that comes at night, the sand, shells, smell, and...decorating (of course!)

At this time of year, many decorating stores feature bags of shells, glassware, and varying shades of blue and green. Here are some of my favorite "sea displays" that I love to return to on such hot, humid days.

The collection above is on a small, wooden, file cabinet in my home office. The driftwood, rocks, and shells were all collected on trips.

Pottery plates (in milky blues) are great for displaying shells and other "sea objects." This one has blue rocks that I bought in Maine.

Frankly, Scarlet!

After the first week of June "intense summer online teaching session," I'm back!

I decided that today I would enjoy the daylillies that are finally in glorious bloom. I know I shared pictures of lillies before, however, today I am posting my Frankly, Scarlet American Beauties.

These extremely large daylillies border our front door. The blooms are over 6" and the color is brilliant.

This is the fourth year they have bloomed and will need to be divided in the fall.

Because daylillies are simple to grow, I have several other varieties in the courtyard and around the front of our house. Although not all in bloom yet, here are a few others. The flowers are smaller--approximately 3" in diameter.

In search of Rosie's shoes...

It seems like every time I take my mother out shopping, we are in search of the perfect shoe! In my mind, shopping day with mom is really the "search for Rosie's shoes" and is very similar to the quest for the Holy Grail!

For me--having had minor back surgery--I am most satisfied with either a soft pair of UGGs, Toms, Old Gringos, or anything that resembles a comfortable flip flop!

Although I have been known to wear Choos that are way too high for walking across a campus, I am not that obsessed with shoes.

However, after our Friday search for the "ungettable" perfect shoe, (...one that is closed toed, but summer-y, has some type of ankle strap, is lightweight, and is not "too high...") I started to think about shoes and shoe design.

Of course it seems that every notable designer also has a shoe line. But, what came to mind was the simple, classic espadrille--the shoe that seems to meet all of Rosie's criteria for a summer shoe!

I started my quest and education of shoes by finding out more about the espadrille. Did you know that this wonderous shoe had it's origin in Spain? Also, did you know that the name is derived from the Catalan name for the shoes, espardenya?

I tried to explain the design to my mother, however, she did not see this classic shoe as being...SEXY! (...do I hear the term octogenarian cougar forming in your brain?!).

The "non sexy" image" may be in part because this classic style -- traditionally made from natural fiber and rope -- was worn by peasants.

BUT (and this is what I will sell Rosie on...) the shoe was made popular by Lauren Bacall in the movie, Key Largo...ahhhh Bogie and Becall...classics themselves!

A quick Zappos search produced way too many choices! Red, gold, striped, flowered, green, black, glittered, textured, oy! I think one of these would be perfect for Rosie because they meet all of the criteria:

For me, it will be these rockin' kates to add to my Choos!

I just ordered these (really!) to help with the "search for Rosie's shoes!"

Another tiling adventure!

Here's the next installment of our "tiling adventure!" Over the winter we had our upstairs full bath "redone!" Of course most of our friends and family tell us that the bath was perfectly fine.

...but, after working on the other bathrooms I decided to swank-it-up on this one too.

I always thought that this particular bath was boring because it originally had standard fixtures and kacki walls.

The bath is a bit large and is structured with two rooms--an entry room with a double sink which leads to the actual bath with tub, shower, linen closet, etc.

First, I had the white marble removed and replaced with a milk chocolate granite counter. The counter alone gave the room an entirely different look.

Walls were done with a glazing technique and "ragging." This involves three steps and three types of paint (see below).

After the counter was replaced, I replaced the fixtures with oiled bronze similar to what I did in the downstairs guest bath. Next...the tile!

I used three different types of tumbled, natural stone and began with a border around the tub backsplash. Here you can see the wall technique.

I added a 3/4" glass sliding door framed in oiled bronze to match the fixtures.

I bordered the sink area with three sizes of tumbled, natural stone.

I know it sounds crazy, but since this room adjoins our upstairs family room, I hung sports memorabilia of commemorative sporting events that I had professionally framed...quirky, but ...and there you have it -- how do you like our boring bathroom now?

My husband and I began our appreciation for wine several years ago when we took a Wine Class! We actually learned a good deal considering that the class was delivered entirely online.

Working closely with a local wine store, we were able to follow the lessons and develop a sense of what to expect from different types of wines.

Now, I can honestly say that -- if blindfolded -- I can identify different wines based on the grape/s they were made from.

Several years ago we went on a self-directed wine tour in Napa and Sonoma Valley. I never thought that I would ever be able to visit a local winery that reflected the true atmosphere of wineries in the actual California wine country...that is until I visited Arrington Vineyards!

AV is located in between Nashville, M'boro, and Franklin (...the trifecta of wine country?). It was founded (and is still owned) by country artist, Kix Brooks, and is a "one of a kind" for Tennessee.

The tasting room offers free wine tastings each day. On several days each week local musicians and song writers give concerts. The large natural areas surrounding the winery provide open space for picnics and good wine! The winery has evolved into a "place to be" and the elaborate picnic displays are something to see!

In addition, the wines are quite good. My favorites include Red Fox Run (blend), KB 206 (cab), and White Stag (Chard). We just joined the Arrington Vineyards Wine Club and will be picking up our June selection this week.

Expresso as a means of expression!

I've been off for a few days...but not really! My "uber session" is going strong, so I decided to take a couple of days off from blogging to "devote to my students!"

Today I started thinking about all of the ways I have tried to make our house less formal...

The house plans called for a Butler's Pantry.

I had never seen one in a newer home but remembered all of the cool historic sites I had visited that had a Butler's Pantry adjacent to a kitchen or dining room.

In most cases, a Butler's Pantry is a place to store the "good china" and the crystal.

Although I have the "real stuff" in terms of china, I opted not to display it in the Butler's Pantry. This lead me to my quest for collecting Expresso sets! I always remember my grandmother making the "demitasse" or Expresso on Sundays. She would let me have a taste...even with the Sambuca!

Now, after six years--our Butler's Pantry is filled with quirky sets! Some are traditional and others are colorful and interesting. I mixed the sets in with a few teapots (even though I don't use the Expresso cups with tea).

This simple set is from Italy and is glazed in the colors of the pantry...black, white, and gray.

It's the only one I have that came with dessert plates!

Circus animals...very whimsical, don't you think?!

Friday workspace!

Today's work space is located in our formal living room. I don't often work there because the window is open the light is typically very strong making a "sun-like" glare on my computer screen.

The table is really a dining room table that folds up to a narrow desk-like piece.

The chairs match our dining room chairs and serve as "extras" for guests. The smooth wood and soft lighting make this a great work space for early evenings.

I like looking out on the common areas in our neighborhood, which gives more depth to our bungalow-like set up with courtyard and seclusion.

The "table-desk" has a narrow draw in the front where I keep interesting writing cards ... that I never use because I rarely handwrite notes! But, I pick them up when traveling and they remind me of places we've been.

My husband threw this piece. He rolled a design and left the clay body (no glaze)for added interest.

I, however, am still thinking of different workspaces around the house to break up my computer time.

Another great space for working is nestled in a corner in one of the guest bedrooms.

I wanted to make a comfortable space for this particular room because -- in addition to being one of the guest bedrooms -- it is also a great place for yoga and exercising.

I found this desk at a local furniture store and paired it with a heavy, mission style chair that I found at Pier One. The desk is very functional and the chair is great for sitting long periods of time.

A small flat screened tv helps to provide background while working and also serves as the display for the Wii and dvds.

I brought this poster back from a trip to N.Y. and had it framed in a simple black frame.

I threw this pot a few years ago. The glaze is an "ash glaze" and adds interest to the desk.

Today we begin the May "uber session," where every day is equivalent to one week in "regular semester years!"

Knowing that I will be online constantly, I have prepared yet another excellent work space.

I always read that you should never work in your bedroom, but... sometimes it is necessary to look out to the serene courtyard while working and "watching" movies!

I also like to have an easy chair nearby so that I can take a break from computing and stretch out.

Workspace for the day: The Parson's desk and chair from Crate and Barrel are finished in honey. The color and smoothness alone lend for working!

On what seems like very RARE sunny days, I can look out to the fountain in the courtyard and read a little Audrey to refresh...what would Audrey do...

Favorite pottery piece that I made (center) arranged with others that I purchased when traveling. The small piece to the right is like a shaker/stress reliever...I still can't figure out how it was made!

Reading on yet another rainy Sunday!

This is a FIRST! I am reading on a rainy Sunday, but today I am using my iBooks Library on my iPad!

Although the iBooks store doesn't have a very large selection of decorating-based books, I did find a few that seem interesting.

After this post, I am going to head for my Krups, pour a cup, grab a favorite throw, and settle down with my new device and the newest additions to my library!

Here's what I found...

The first is a "how to" book. I thought it would be fun to download this one because I can carry it around with me while taking "electronic" notes about future projects.

As a university professor it is always necessary to work at home on projects, writing, and coursework.

As a university professor who designs online courses and who also teaches online, it becomes essential to create work spaces that are conducive to...working!

For me (...with my very short attention span...) this means that I have to have multiple spaces where comfortable desks, chairs, music, and "scenery" are present.

By doing so, it makes working for long hours on a computer easier and also helps to break up the hours that are spent working from home.

Essentials: Furniture that lends to the task at hand, comfortable chairs for the long hours, and additional pieces for interest!

I'll be sharing some of my favorite work spaces over the next few days. Here's the first!

I know I talked previously about old pieces that I purchased at art crawls and antique malls. This is one of my favorites!

I converted this side table into a workspace that sits in our screened in porch. The "desk" is worn and the wood is smooth. The old can chair is comfortable and "broken in." This is a great space for working on cool nights when deadlines must be met!

Check out the worn top...it makes one wonder who used the "desk" previously!

When we were building our current house, I tried to somewhat "reproduce" the model in terms of the design and in keeping with the bungalow spirit.

One of the focal points in the house was the family or gathering room. In the model (left), the room was simple and reflected an almost serene feel. The room looks out to the courtyard and the model courtyard was very "zen like."

Considering that we were looking at a model home, of course there weren't any signs that someone inhabited the room--which strengthened the zen quality.

I knew that I wanted to add some things, but also liked the design. I didn't want to purchase a new sofa because the black leather one we already owned was so comfy! (...and we were already planning to purchase tables, lamps, etc.)

So...here's what I came up with. I included a few pictures from the model home to show the similarities.

Our furniture reflects the mission style with oak tables that are topped with black slate and flour bin handles. Lamps also reflect the bungalow design. Black and white photos of New York above the sofa. Casablanca ceiling fan (same as model but I changed the globe).

The book collector...

I am a reader and ultimately a collector of books. I think this stems from my not owning books as a child. I remember running to the public library with my childhood friend, Colleen, to check out as many books as we could carry.

In fact, one of the first series of books I remember reading with Colleen was the Little House collection.

When my own children were little, I bought way too many books for them--books from bookstores, flea markets, and library sales. I tried to encourage them to read as much as possible...and they still do!

Being a university professor, it is very easy to read for "business" rather than pleasure on most days. But...with summer approaching, I am preparing for my summer reads.

With this said (...and due to the numerous books we own), I often use books for decorating. I don't think there is a room in our house that doesn't contain a book! Shelves everywhere, books galore! ...sometimes the "piles" get out of hand like the one above that reflects my obsession with the Sookie Stackhouse series...True Blood anyone?

I took a few days off to prepare for the upcoming "uber semester" in May (...17 days PACKED with information!).

I'm back now and would like to share some of the artwork that adorns the Bennie Dillon!

Our downtown loft highlights local artists on each floor. The 12 floor building has a painting or piece of artwork on each floor.

As residents or visitors exit the elevator on any of the 12 floors, they are greeted with soft lighting, colorful walls, and art!

Every other floor features similar artwork--some from the same artist--creating interesting themes throughout.

The walls and carpeting complement each piece. Take a journey through the Bennie Dillon artwork...from paintings to metal sculptures, to art made from license plates!

When we first moved into our house, the thought of filling our good sized dining room was daunting.

Not being a very "formal" person or entertainer, I had to think very hard about how I would decorate the room.

The building plans called for two round columns on each side of the opening. So...my quest to turn a formal dining room into a comfortable, inviting room began by having the very "Greek looking" columns removed.

With this done, I added beadboard and had it painted white. The beadboard is higher than a typical chair rail which usually appears in formal rooms.

The beadboard helped to create a bungalow look. After we moved in, my husband added a plate ledge which now holds wheel-thrown plates that he made.

The furniture is from the Ethan Allen British Classics collection. I selected the oversized table and chairs (arm chairs and side chairs), but not the sideboard to keep with a more informal look.

The carving on the chair backs and table legs reflect the British Classics influence. Unlike most traditional dining room furniture, the table legs are carved with a sideways design instead of a vertical design.

No crystals on the overhead light fixture...that would be WAY too stuffy and traditional. Instead, I selected this funky fixture that would probably be more suited hanging over a pool table! I love it!

This old piece purchased at one of the Avant Garage sales serves as my "sideboard." I store extra plates and glasses on a lower shelf and use the top for pottery!

This Ethan Allen small wine cabinet holds our collection of "first issue" wines.

Since the table is very long, it gives me many opportunities for displays!

For holidays, I have been known to go way overboard!

This is a simple "in between events" table display that includes three stoneware pieces, hurricanes from Pottery Barn, willow branches, and a runner from Crate and Barrel that picks up the design of the carpet.

Viva Cinco de Mayo!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Today I celebrate some of the decorating (and useful) items I have purchased on trips to Mexico as well as items purchased in the U.S. that were imported from Mexico!

I love this pitcher and glasses set. The glass is filled with imperfections and rimmed in blue. The imperfections and "bubbles" make it unique. The set is heavy and can be used indoors and outdoors--think summer parties!

This small platter is from Playa del Carmen.
It's great for cheese and crackers (and looks awesome with the glasses and pitcher set above).

We use these tiles as coasters in the gazebo. We purchased these in a market in San Antonio.

I use this traditional Mexican blanket (purchased on a trip to Mexico) as a throw on an old cane chair that sits in our screened in porch.

This runner is handmade and was purchased on a trip to Mexico. The style and weave are unusual and when used on our dining room table, the runner adds "spice" to an otherwise formal room.

Today my thoughts are with all of the business owners, musicians, and downtown dwellers as they sift through the mud and water in the aftermath of the storms and flooding.

I'd like to share some photos I took in April...when the showers promised spring.

I always save the digital pictures and then, in the dead of winter, revisit them using Photoshop as a prelude to warm weather and spring.

The most interesting digital photos are those where I zoom in on a particular piece of the "whole." Those are my favorites!

Sometimes I just print the pictures, frame them, and sit them here and there on tables or shelves. I have several of a favorite tree taken through four seasons. I also use some as desktop wallpaper, in web design, and in coursework. Here are a few shots that I plan to frame and use in decorating:

As the water resides, I'm thinking of the calm that hopefully will follow. The Mother Church is safe, the Honky Tonks are still open, and the symphony will keep playing somewhere...

Decorating with sundials!

Today I thought I would share some ideas regarding decorating with sundials! Yes, that's what I said!

My husband has this obsession with making pottery sundials. He begins by throwing a plate and then adds interesting enhancements to make the piece "usable."

Over the years we have taken pottery classes, we have accumulated numerous sundials and other "earth, space, and air" related instruments.

I decided at one point (not sure when) to begin adding my favorites to our courtyard. I also keep some in the house and loft as conversation pieces. I purchased plant stands here and there to place the sundials on within the courtyard.

The glazes are varied and unique to each design. Some use typical stoneware glaze, others reflect what is known as "ash" glaze.

Here are several:

I attended the Tim Gunn Event at The Mall in Green Hills yesterday amid the storms, tornado warnings, and floods.

The event was sponsored by kate spade, Juicy Couture, and Lucky.

It was one of those memorable events that--no matter what else is going on--you will only remember what was happening based on the colors, sounds, and sights!

Here are some of my pictures of the newly decorated kate spade store along with some favorites from the fashion show! (My awesome purchase of the day...the small straw bag you see on the counter! It has these funky gold handles laced with coral leather! Genny selected a red, Clinton Street small purse ... as Tim says..."kate spade is for the sophisticated women who is also likes whimsy and surprise!)

The kate spade store in Green Hills just reopened after an extensive renovation. Susan (store manager) told me that the renovation was being called the 5th Avenue renovation because the old store ... which is not that old to begin with... would be designed based on the kate spade on 5th in NYC!

To celebrate the store reopening, a special guest will be giving a talk and taking part in a mini-fashion show. The guest is none other than...TIM GUNN!!!

Tim was in N'ville last year and I had a chance to attend the event, which was awesome. I will be attending again and bringing Genny!

So, in honor of the store reopening, I decided to share a little about kate spade design! I am a collector of kate and had to have a closet renovated to accommodate my bags! I love the unique yet functional design of the bags along with the "history" and names. The one above is the Big Apple Bon Shopper!

Here are several pictures of the "old store" during the previous Tim event. You can see the classic simplicity of the old store design. The purses are the true decoration. I always think of them as somewhat quirky, eclectic prep style... bags that inspire an eclectic look and nothing too "matchy matchy!"

I will have my camera ready tomorrow and plan to take MANY pics! Here is another of my favorite bags. It's the Hand in Hand Break the Rules Tote. The embroidered design was done by Bosnian women and some of the proceeds go to a relief fund. I love the bag - it's perfect for my iPad and...It's...ME!

After a certain amount of time, each bag is "retired" making them valuable to any katespader!

Decorating with mixed-media art!

This Saturday is the First Saturday Art Crawl in Nashville! It is one of our favorite events each month.

Most of the galleries feature local artists, however, there are always a few who are nationally known exhibiting their creations.

I seems to always be drawn to mixed-media pieces or those unconventional techniques that do not usually involve canvas.

These are a few of the pieces we have purchased over the years. They are part of my decorating scheme...after all...what is decorating without art?

Cooking and decorating with herbs...

I can't believe that in the short time since I planted this year's herb garden I am already cutting and drying!

This process involves several steps and also presents decorating opportunities.

The garden was planted (and revitalized) within the last few weeks. I have been keeping track of the growth and have already been able to cut and begin the drying process for thyme, rosemary, parsley, and cilantro.

Once the herbs grow approximately four inches (or double in size), I cut them back for drying. You can also freeze them or use them immediately after cutting.

I use a small basket, herb scissors, and twine.

After a thorough rinsing, I drain the herbs on paper towels or dish towels. Tie with the twine and they're ready for drying. I use a trellis purchased from Home Depot set up in the screened in porch for drying. (2009 pictures above and below)

Here's what I have drying so far. It takes about three weeks for the herbs to completely dry. Then, I remove the twine and stems and save and store in stainless containers.

Today I was thinking about all of the items that I have collected over the years--some discarded by the original owner, some purchased at antique shops, and some "acquired" through purchase at the Avant Garage Sale.

Sometimes, I see something when I least expect to and can envision it somewhere -- on a table, bookshelf, or wall.

Other times I get an idea and then look for the item to use in decorating.

Here are some of my favorite "historical things"...

This is a wreath that I have had for over 25 years. It's made from cotton bolls after the fibers were harvested. It has traveled with us to two states and many different homes.

This old tool box sits on a cherry hall table. I had to wrestle it away from a senior gentleman...

Old drafting table purchased at the Avant Garage Sale in Nashville (The Arts Company). I recently saw a similar table and stool in the Restoration Hardware catalog for uber $$$! Old flight charts scattered on top give an interesting twist!

Adding "seats" for guests!

Adding extra space for entertaining in a 600 sq ft loft is challenging, but, what fun?!

To add extra seating for guests, I decided to make the most of the hallway and eating bar. This area is the only place in the loft with a lower ceiling.

I wanted to create an interesting space but also didn't want the low ceiling to prevent me from going with a darker colors.

I decided to add an "interest wall" and wanted to try stippling! Stippling involves multiple steps and two different types of paint technique brushes (along with the typical paint roller).

My idea was to select paint and a technique that would pick up the black granite design. I used Ralph Lauren paint and the "antique leather" technique.

Three coats of a rust color first, then covered with a glaze, and then "stippled" with a stipple brush.

I added a Parson's table in Beet (West Elm), a set of mugs that I threw, and a piece of artwork from the Refuse and Reuse collection (Estel Gallery).

I also wanted a special place for this piece that was made by Brian Downey (The Arts Company). It sits on the Beet table and is one of the first things you see when you enter the loft.

My husband hung beadboard under the counter and I stained it a dark walnut for a funky old look.

Two saddle stools finish the area and make an interesting space for guests because the counter overlooks the kitchen and living area. (Carpet from West Elm)

Future plans: I have River Rock paint to "soften" the beige walls...summer painting to come!

On this stormy Saturday, I am thinking about one of my favorite chairs...a cup of coffee, and the upcoming Preds game!

Almost a year ago my husband bought me a Stickley rocker for Mother's Day. It was a HUGE surprise because I usually am worrying more about purchasing the right gifts for my mother and mother-in-law and never think about "getting" -- only giving.

The Stickley rocker sits in our upstairs, second family room. The wood is polished and smooth. The seat an awesome dark green, soft leather.

I took the day off from blogging yesterday due to the "pack up" in Jones Hall.

Today, I decided to share one of my favorite places in our downtown building!

Once the lofts were all sold, the sales office was converted to a "meeting room, resident's area, work room, etc."

Much of the original sales office furniture stayed--just rearranged a bit. On Saturday mornings or on weekday nights, I pop in to check out who's using the meeting room.

On many occasions, I have seen other residents using the area for work, relaxation, and just for hanging out!

My husband and I always think that the meeting room would be great for weekday, informal meetings as well as for mini conferences. What do you think?

Situated off the lobby, the meeting area is on the first floor of the Bennie Dillon. You can see the original banister and marble floor. The meeting room is to the left of this picture.

This cafe table was originally in the BD cafe downstairs on the ground floor. The table looks out the the lobby. It's a great addition to the meeting area. Check out the cool carpeting which complements the deep red accent walls.

I arrived on campus today equipped with moving and storage materials. Although we have about two more weeks, I decided that today I was going to pack up and get the office ready for the move.

We won't get into the new building until January, however, faculty are being required to pack up for heating and cooling repairs that will take place over the summer.

When faced with a move, my suggestion is...The Container Store!

For files--lightweight plastic that holds up for transporting

Of course I also brought silver tarps and turquoise duct tape...just for effect! I would like to say, Happy Moving, but I am too sore!

Sleeping downtown!

Considering the small area for sleeping in a 600 sq ft loft, the "master and only bedroom" in our downtown loft has slowly evolved over the last three years. In my attempt to make the bedroom cozy and inviting, I have already been through four quilts/coverlets, two sets of window dressings, two wall colors, and a variety of artwork.

The room is approximately 10' by 10' and has two large--but narrow--windows on one wall. The windows have an excellent view of the city. On another wall is the doorway to the bath and on a third wall is a small closet.

The walls were originally painted white and the room has a way too small ceiling fan. As you can see, the entire effect was stark. The terrazzo floors (below) had not yet been cleaned.

The developer allowed one of two wall colors--I selected Shaker Beige (yuck!). For furniture--Ethan Allen Horizons in dark Maine ash. With the small space, only four pieces could fit comfortably.

At first I used a simple coverlet in kacki and added the dark brown wool throw.

For the floors - a simple shag rug in tones of oatmeal. I wanted to keep the windows open so I hung silk and linen drapes.

The rod is at the upper most point on the wall. This enhanced the height of the ceiling.

Lamps and an old director's chair finished the room. ...but, I wasn't happy with the starkness.

I decided that a new wall color was needed! Ralph Lauren River Rock in Steamboat Basin. Although this picture looks more tan than the actual color, the walls have a taupe and "muddy" color. Sounds awful, but looks amazing and complements the narrow brick wall that leads to the bedroom.

I replaced the artwork (large framed poster) with a set of guitars painted by a local artist from Bell Buckle. ...just because we are in N'ville! Here you can see the actual wall color.

The coverlet was replaced by this cool quilt from Crate and Barrel. I added a few more coverlets in different textures and colors (brown quilt, bamboo throw, and gray throw from West Elm).

Additional artwork was purchased and hung on several of the walls to add color and interest.

The ceiling fan was replaced with a larger one that has amber glass globes that give off a cozy glow.

Future plans: Hardwood floors and a closet by California Closets! ...until then...

The new Yazoo!

Yazoo Brewing Company has moved! Originally located in the old Marathon Motors warehouse, the brewing company has finally made the move to a larger space in The Gulch.

To the "naked eye," one would never know that a brewing company was even operating in the old warehouse. Only open on certain days, the only clue that the brewery was open in the Marathon warehouse was the Yazoo sign that would be hung on "tap room days!"

The courtyard was grimy and...oh such character!

I loved the old warehouse--with the grungy but awesomely cool courtyard and very small tap room.

The new and improved Yazoo is now in a larger building. The tap room is much bigger with tables scattered around a "warehouse" style room.

Walls are painted deep red and soft gold to complement the exposed ceiling. Fans add soft lighting. The cinder block walls are bordered with corrugated metal for an industrial look.

A concrete counter (painted to look like terra cotta) allows for multiple taps unlike the old Yazoo that had one tap per beer.

Last night we visited LeQuire Gallery on Charlotte Avenue in N'ville to attend a reception and talk given by the author Madison Smartt Bell and to pick up a piece of Haitian art that we purchased at the First Saturday Art Crawl (first Saturday in April).

The gallery is in an unassuming warehouse-type building and was filled with others who came to listen, view, and purchase. LeQuire Gallery is owned by Alan LeQuire who is known for his sculpture, Musica, which "welcomes" music lovers, musicians, and dancers to the heart of Music Row.

The gallery features some of LeQuire's work scattered within the simple, minimalist design.

Bell has written three books on the Haitian revolution. As a result, he has been an art liaison in bringing Haitian artists' work to the U.S., selling the art, and returning a good portion of the sale money to Haiti.

In addition, LeQuire Gallery is returning 75% of the proceeds from all sales of the Haitian art to the Haitian Relief Fund.

The piece we purchased caught my eye because it appears to have been painted directly onto a piece of fabric literally ripped from a pair of pants. ... and without supplies, it seems logical!

You can see the frayed edges and stitching that may have been the pant leg above.

The only thing we know about the artist is that his name is Andy. We liked the piece because it reminded us of another piece we have which is done in a similar manner that was painted by one of the Lost Boys of Sudan.

I plan to have the painting mounted on a burlap mat, surrounded by a second mat and framed with a simple black frame. ...not sure where it will hang yet, I'll let Andy's spirit and the kids in the picture inspire me!

We finally are on a "warming streak" here in N'ville! With temperatures over 80 already, I begin thinking about the textiles that I use for decorating.

Being cold-natured, I usually have lots of quilts hanging around. Even in the summer, I like to curl up with a cup of coffee and a lightweight quilt.

I also like to use interesting textiles for decorating--unexpectedly. For example, I have used old rag rugs as well hangings, table runners and scarves as window dressings, silk scarves as table runners, and quilts as table coverings.

Here are some of my favorite quilts and textiles:

This magnolia flower quilt was made by a West Virginia quilt maker. It has been used as a bed coverlet (my daughter's room when she was a child), a table covering at my sister-in-law's wedding, and as a wall hanging.

Each year, I plant an herb garden and/or replenish a previously started one. Given the limited space in our courtyard, I have had to resort to "creativity in planting!"

My first herb garden attempt was done in an old wheelbarrow. The plants did okay, but I had a problem with drainage because the soil remained too moist.

Now, I just use a variety of terra cotta pots and they work much better!

In addition to the benefits from cooking with herbs, the fragrance of the herbs and the variety in color and texture make them great for decorating in the courtyard.

I once read that lavender should be planted in the front and back of a garden to bring good luck. So, I begin with lavender and arrange three-four different types in large pots.

This year I was able to use the established lavender garden I started last year.
I added Spanish lavender to the spike and English varieties.

Next, three kinds of thyme, dill (which is ALWAYS difficult to find) and Rosemary.

We use basil all year long and always plant one large pot of Sweet Basil with parsley. The basil grows best in a sunny location and usually gets up to 12" before I have to trim back.

A small pot of Cilantro...just enough to get us through the summer.

Two types of oregano--Greek and varigated. (Grapevines in the background!)

And, now we wait for the first "cutting," drying, and using!

The faculty in Educational Leadership (and several other departments in Jones Hall) are being evicted! ... for the summer that is -- so that the heating/cooling system can be repaired.

Since I will be teaching online during May and June, I know I will be working from home. ...but, I have been thinking that I will be doing most of my daytime work at the loft.

So, this is going to call for some quick redecorating!

My current space is small, but, has a great view:

From this window, I can see Vanderbilt, Belmont, West End, and part of the TSU campus! It's a bit cramped and doesn't have enough desktop space.

This small workspace is next to a flat screen television--making it a bit distracting when working.

So, I also have this even small workspace in the hallway.

So, I am in the process of searching for some decorating ideas for my new, summer set up!

Decorating with black and white photos helps to sharpen and tone down colorful rooms. Framed with a simple black wood frame and white double mat, the photos create focal points.

Although most of these were taken with a digital camera, I created black and white prints taken in several of my favorite places.

I've been thinking about the upcoming Tour of Homes (one week away!) and decided to share some of my favorite "parade rooms" that I collected over the years. I always like to carry my camera and to take pictures so that I can use them later for decorating inspiration.

Here are some of my favs!

This is a great arrangement for an area devoted to art! I love the placement in front of the big window.

As a university professor, I am a "collector of books." This may change as soon as I get my iPad/3-G! ...but isn't this a great idea for a bookshelf?

This is a loft kitchen which looks out into Printer's Alley in Nashville. The same loft had a bedroom that overlooks the kitchen (below).

Guess what this is...it's the doorway leading to a wine cellar off a garage! This was a rather large home that had many alcoves, twists, and turns.

...awesome, don't you think?

This living room in an otherwise traditional home had these great shelves made from oak 2" by 4" planks. The gold on the walls added to the unique design.

This small drafting table was the inspiration for my search for ... a drafting table!

...woodworking 101!

When we built our house we wanted a custom banister, however, the builder and contractor told us that it "couldn't be done!"

I don't have a picture of the original, but the original banister looked something like this one.

but...the banister in the model home that was similar to our floor plan looked like this one--very bungalow-inspired, don't you think?

The banister is in the front hallway and is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. I couldn't stand the "traditional banister" with the think white posts! ...and so, my journey for a substantial banister began!

We contacted Andy and Jeff (from the gazebo). Andy wasn't able to work on the banister, but Jeff took on the job.

Original posts were removed and replaced with oak posts and a newel that was more substantive.

Since we are city dwellers part of the week, I thought I would talk a little about creating "courtyard space" in urban environments. Each year the Nashville Downtown Partnership holds the annual Downtown Home Tour.

The Westview's rooftop garden and gazebo were part of the tour several years ago. Isn't the view most excellent?!!! You can see the Bennie Dillon and our window in the picture to the left!

Courtyard Style...Part Tres!

Back to the courtyard!

Ms. Audrey--getting impatient...when will this be finished?!

Now, here's the finished courtyard and what I have done myself:

Back entry / Left side: I removed the cramped juniper that bordered the pathway and added two small Nandina, mulched, and placed an armillary in the center.

Back entry / Right side: re-mulched and trimmed the golden cyprus. I also bordered the gate on both sides with leftover pavers that I used liquid nails to secure.

I found this old piece of iron fencing at an antique shop in Bell Buckle, TN. ...strange, but interesting!

My husband installed the waterfall fountain that I found at a local Farmer's CO-OP. We also added an outdoor heater for cool nights.

I pruned the Nandinas and re-mulched all beds last weekend.

Large Japanese Maple that was hit hard by an early frost two years ago is coming back strong. All of the sundials (on ground) were made by my husband.

Our furniture (under the gazebo) is made from reclaimed plows. We ordered it from Napa Style in California and had it shipped to Tennessee!

This rocker is also from Napa Style. It's made from an old wine barrel and wine barrel staves.

Courtyard Style...Part Deux

Last winter...

...then spring came! I noticed that many of the shrubs looked overgrown--giving the entire courtyard a cramped feeling.

I contacted a local landscaper and gave him my ideas for a "courtyard remodeling." The remodeling was prompted by some flooding that we experienced.

...but little did I know that the courtyard would be "un-enjoyable" all of last summer. What began with a small "fix" turned into a courtyard nightmare that included mud, a large hole, gaping wires from the irrigation system, and a couple of very unhappy dogs who also could not enjoy our "secret garden!"

Miss Audrey Hepburn and Prince William (Diana's boy) who are typically chillin' in the courtyard, but, due to the "remodeling" could not even take a nap in the shade!

Last spring - the fireplace, grill, and food prep area remained intact as did the gazebo! ...but...

This is a picture of the original courtyard design. You can see an area to the back where we had a table. This area flooded due to poor drainage in the original design and needed to be remodeled and redesigned. Also, you can see how cramped the plants are: azaelea, day lillies, small arborvitae, and coral bells with a juniper thrown in!

The gaping hole and mud...which became the bane of my existence for an entire summer!

It is amazing to me that with the economy the way it is, you would think that a landscaper would want to finish a job and receive his $$$ !!! This remained as you see it from March 2009 until November 2009!

Once the area was drained and paved, I had the landscaper replace some of the shrubs.

Landscaper added the pathway to match what was at the other entry. I asked him to replant the small Japanese Maple (October Fire) and to add golden cyprus, blue juniper, and boxwoods to keep with the same pattern of plants.

What I did: I used leftover pavers to border the hvac unit and used liquid nails to secure them. The Lavender Garden (to the right) has been going for two years now!

At this point, I had to say..."you're fired," and continued the remodeling on my own... gotta love the DIY!
