Bathroom obsession...

Here I am once again talking about bathrooms!  I think my obsession with renovating bathrooms (...in a house that is only 5 years old...) is due to the recent articles I have been reading about how bathrooms and kitchens--when renovated or updated--add to the value of a home.

This bathroom journey began last summer when I noticed that part of the marble surrounding the porcelain tub was bowing off the wall.  I had these visions of guests in the bathroom being hit in the head and knocked out from "flying marble!"

Of course, I HAD to do something about this problem!  ...what I didn't have to do was completely renovate the entire full guest bath!

After what seemed like over 100 phone calls and Internet searches, I found this great local company--Cultured Design Marble--and scheduled an appointment to get an estimate.

What started out to be a simple replacement of surround marble, quickly "emerged" into the full blown renovation which included:

  • Ripping out the tub and replacing it with a stand alone shower,
  • Removing the arched wall and replacing with marble framework,
  • Repainting,
  • Tiling--custom job--not done by me (three different sizes and types of natural stone),
  • New fixtures in oiled bronze,
  • Cabinet pulls in oiled bronze,
  • Replacing the white, standard marble counter with midnight granite,
  • New shower door (3/4" -- because I saw one at the W Hotel in Times Square!),
  • Repainting--Ralph Lauren River Rock in Fawn,
  • ...and the BIG one - removing the tile floor and replacing it with 7" hardwood!!
Throughout the entire job, Jerry, Susan, and Jeremy were awesome (Cultured Design Marble).
Opening where the arch and original porcelain tub was.  Hardwood flooring being installed.

Maine hardwood - 7" plank in Honey, which matches the rest of the house.

Three kinds and sizes of natural stone tile ranging from 1" (right), 2" (left), and 4" (above).  All stone was purchased at a local Home Depot.

New countertop in midnight.  The sink is an extended bowl that is extra deep.

New fixtures in the shower to replace the tub spout.  Faucets were originally in the bath.  All oiled bronze and matched with the shower door handle. (Delta fixtures purchased at a local bath supply.)
Cabinet pulls were replaced to match the oiled bronze fixtures.  Mission cabinets in cherry.  Mission light fixture was originally in the bathroom.

3/4" glass shower doors...like in the W!  The doors were installed by Murfreesboro Mirror. (...thanks, Randy!)  Marble shower with seats and natural stone accents.

Finished!

Although I didn't expect to completely renovate, I LOVE the guest bath...and so do my guests!

...totally obsessed with renewing bathrooms!
