A couple of Christmases ago I got a wet saw for cutting tile. The saw is pretty easy to use once you get familiar with the measuring and feeding (into the blade). Last week, I decided to put up tile in the master bathroom to add and enhance what was already installed.
The inspiration for the wall color came from a small, clay ring holder. The glaze colors are a deep burnt orange and a dark mossy green--none of which are showing up in the picture that well. The orange became the bathroom wall color and the green went into the adjoining master bedroom. The original counter was white marble (too traditional!) and was replaced with a taupe, brown, and cream granite. (Cultured Design Marble). Armed with my "supplies," I got to work measuring and cutting the tile.
I always use Ralph Lauren paint -- this time I used the Urban Loft collection color, Broadway for the bathroom walls. I came up with a pattern that at first I didn't like. But, it has grown on me! I replaced the white builder's switchplates with stainless plates and it made the entire wall look very different.
I ended up with three types of tile. Two were tumbled marble with a distressed finish (rectangular and square). The third type came in a checkerboard pattern with several different colors in the pattern. The checkerboard stones were already on a backing and were natural stone.
The tile now borders each wall near the sink and helps to catch any water that splashes. There is also a glass tiled privacy window above the jacuzzi that I bordered with the same pattern.
I finished off the effect with four wheel thrown pots that I made over the past year. Three are grouped on the center counter and the other holds handsoap. The glazes: Ethyl's red (gloss), black, VY (yellow), and cream. This is a picture of the three of the pots on one of the shelves that border the jacuzzi.
The bathroom does not reflect the original design at all and looks cozy, inviting, and interesting.
