Office Spaces: What will happen to Jones Hall?

My university was established as the state "Normal School," which means that it began as a teacher preparation school.  As a professor of education, my office is in one of three of the oldest buildings on campus.  The building, dating back to 1911, served as a men's dorm.

As the university grew from a teacher's college to a four year college, and eventually to a four year university with several colleges--many new buildings were added.  Interestingly enough, the College of Education never had a building of their own!

However,  with the upcoming 100th anniversary of the university...guess what?!  The College of Education is finally getting their own building.

This brings me to today's entry.  I have been in three different offices in the current Jones Hall and have painted many a wall here.   At first, I absolutely hated the fact that my department was housed in such an old building.  But, after many years on campus, I have come to really like the building.  I often think of all of the teachers who were trained here and all of the classrooms they have moved to!

At any rate, I strongly believe that your office should reflect your style and should be welcoming to anyone who ventures in.  So...  here are several pictures of my office.

I happen to be lucky because my office is in the extreme corner of the oldest part of the building.  This means that I have two windows!  When I moved to this office three years ago, it was painted a "pepto bismal" pink--NO LIE!

Now, the wall are painted in Ralph Lauren Urban Loft collection--neutral brown.  This gives off a soft glow and adds character to the cinder block walls.

I made the window treatments (after ripping down the 95 year old blinds!) and used a striped, silk and cotton fabric in brown, taupe, and soft gold.  The treatments are simulated Roman Shades with ribbon and cord accents.

A large framed picture of the New York skyline makes me feel as if I am looking out of my childhood window.  I added two pullman chairs for students and advisees.  The chairs are covered in a fawn-collored microsuede fabric...very soft!

A cafe table with stools from Target (about $99) adds a nice touch and comes in handy when working on projects or with my laptop.  Classroom artifacts decorate the cherry shelves (personal).  The large wreath (left) hung on the door of the last public school classroom that I taught in.  Books...everywhere, coffee maker...essential since I am in a department with many gentlemen professors who prefer truck stop brew!

Accent lamps (floor and table) also help to create an inviting atmosphere.  Framed pictures came from my previous classrooms as well as my office walls when I was a curriculum writer in the central office for a local school system.

I write this entry with a little regret because of the impending move to a brand, new, building (above).  From the picture below, you can see that an attempt was made to keep the portico.   I look forward to the move, however, I just feel certain that the new building will not have the character or history of Jones Hall.

Wherever your office is, make you own and be sure that it reflects you style.  That's what I am planning to do!
