Courtyard and Gazebo Style...relaxin' in the burbs!

One of the biggest challenges I faced as a "city person" living in the "burbs" was courtyard design.  Our house is located in a subdivision where each home has its own courtyard instead of an actual yard.

When we built the house, we had assistance in the actual design of the courtyard.  Thinking that I was "green thumb challenged,"

I asked the designer to use pavers for most of the space.  A large area was to be taken up by an outdoor fireplace, grill area, and food prep area with mini fridge.

Due to my lack of concentration on the actual plants, everything that was originally planted by the designer has died with the exception of the six arborvitae trees that border the fireplace.  This left me to my own ideas--which weren't very "landscape-oriented" and lead me to overload several small areas with too many trees and plants that would eventually grow to jungle proportions.

So, our courtyard has been evolving for six years!

The fireplace became the focal point.  Constructed with pavers and stone, I had black slate and natural stone installed.  Gas light to the right would also remain as part of the original courtyard.

We originally had put up a gazebo that was made from canvas and wood.  After two years, the thing was in bad need of repair.   We decided that it was time to have a "real gazebo" built--one that would complement the bungalow style of the house.

Designed and built by Andy Englehart and Jeff Parker, here's the progress of our awesome gazebo!

Materials were selected:  Leftover brick from the outside of the house, pavers to match what was already installed.  The materials are sitting on top of the compass.

Next, the actual structure began to take shape.  Paul and the beginnings of the gazebo.

A roof was added.

Shingles!

Roof from underneath.  The workmanship is awesome!

Four pillars made from the house brick were installed.  California cedar was ordered, cut, and used for the structure.  Electrical lines were installed for lighting and media (television, cable, and sound).

Electrical stuff for the lights and media.

Next, Andy and Jeff built a bench that fits between two of the pillars and which adds extra seating for guests and entertaining.

Mission lights were installed in each of the four corners.  I ordered a custom fan specifically made for outdoor areas from a local lighting company.

...finally finished (Andy and Jeff)!

The gazebo at night makes even a city person like me enjoy the "burbs!"

...the Napa Style furniture, the renovation, and the "new look"...more to come!

I'm headed outside to relax...in the courtyard under the gazebo!
